You Are Art is an exhibition of work from the past 3 years of LGBTQ+ life drawing classes at New House. The pieces featured are a collection of drawings and thoughts from of all those who have participated over the years and made the classes what they are: a welcoming and inclusive space for the queer community to enjoy creating together and celebrate the diversity and beauty of LGBTQ+ bodies.
These classes, run by local artist Kai Kathleen, were started in response to noticing a huge lack of queer spaces in Guildford at the time. Having attended a few standard life drawing classes themselves, Kai noticed a pattern of similar body types and a lack of inclusivity which left them dreaming of creating a space where trans and gender non conforming bodies could be at the forefront.
Representation is so important for our community, you can’t be what you don’t see, and so seeing a range of body types being admired as the art they are, can be so impactful for people. The classes aim to be a place where people can take some time to rest, knowing who they are is fully welcomed and accepted and have become a wonderful way to connect with queer people in the local community and beyond
