The Loathly Lady

shifting the gaze in archiving traditional music.

Join performer and researcher Amy Hollinrake for an evening with The Loathly Lady, a folk song cataloguing project and collective that rethinks traditional songs through a feminist lens. Described as “absolutely haunting”, the project challenges inherited narratives, questions their values, and playfully reimagines folk traditions.

This two-hour event begins with an introduction to The Loathly Lady, exploring gender, storytelling, and community within folk music. The second half is a practical workshop in ballad singing, focusing on vocalisation and learning a traditional folk song. Participants will leave with a newly learned song and fresh perspectives on folk storytelling.
