Most people think of India and picture tea. This session is about to change that.
This month Aarti and Vaaruni from RUCHIK bring us South Indian filter coffee, a tradition with its own history, rituals, and way of thinking about coffee.
This isn't a lecture. Aarti and Vaaruni will demonstrate the brewing method as they go, taking us through the history of coffee in South India and the rituals that surround drinking it: the steel tumbler and davara, the pour back and forth that builds the froth, and the unhurried pace of it.
We'll taste two coffees side by side: a pure Arabica, and the traditional Arabica-Robusta-chicory blend that gives South Indian filter coffee its distinctive character. We'll explore what sets them apart, and why.
Expect a session that's sensory and conversational rather than presented at you, where the coffee and story lead the way.
About RUCHIK
RUCHIK began taking shape in winter 2024, when Vaaruni travelled to Bengaluru and spent time exploring the city's cafés and discovering more about South Indian filter coffee. Raised in Mumbai and London with roots in Karnataka, she found herself reconnecting with a part of her heritage through coffee, food and drink.
The name RUCHIK comes from a Konkani/Kannada word meaning “tasteful” or “delicious”. RUCHIK is about bringing a taste of home and heritage in a cup, while helping people discover and understand South Indian filter coffee.
